Lake Superior is an extraordinary place, with a great deal of history all its own. The Light House Tour includes a climb up into the lantern room, offering a unique perspective from which to view Lake Superior and the surroundings. The departure point for the Tour is the Historical Museum, located at 422 River Street in downtown Ontonagon, which will be a separate review. Our explorations included the Ontonagon Light House. It is $5 per adult, and I believe it's $1 for children.We visited Michigan’s Upper Peninsula during the week of July 12-19, 2017. I plan to return and spend more time taking photos outside and retake the ones I took inside as they didn't turn out as nice as I had hoped. This isn't a particularly tall lighthouse. The woman at the working part of the lighthouse knew a lot about lighthouses, and was able to tell me I could see the actual Fresnel lens back at the museum, it is no longer in the lighthouse. The dining room hutch/dresser is exactly like one my husband and I had in our first apartment. My aunt in NYC had an old icebox still in the 1950's. I grew up with a woodburning/coal kitchen stove, and we had a hand pump for water at both my McBride and Olmstead homesteads.

The living quarters are very much like my McBride's had in Chester, New York so it felt like old home. I had 3 young girls as guides, they are learning to become guides so it was very informal but I think they got the basic information across. Don't ask the man there any questions because Mr. However, today they preferred you drive to the lighthouse, park there, and take the bus the short distance to the lighthouse. I came back into town and did see the Ontonagon Historical Museum which, as it ends up, is where they want you to be because there is a bus that takes you to the lighthouse.

I ended up at Ontonagon Township Park, the staff at a snack trailer located there couldn't tell me how to find the lighthouse. I drove to Ontonagon specifically to visit the lighthouse. But if you're ok with high, tight spaces and you've got a good attention span and like learning all sorts of interesting facts then this is a good option. It's only a few blocks away but I still found that weird. Oh you've got to take a van from the town historical center to the lighthouse. I can see how that might not be for everyone. Also, the light house doesn't meet the work place safety standards that at least I've come used to. Multiple people in our group found it way too high and claustrophobic. The big payoff is going up to the top of the lighthouse. Also-if you've got an issue with heights. So if you've got kids with limited attention this attraction might not be for you. The tour of the lighthouse was not great for my kids and they got squirmy.

Ok in the interest of full disclosure I didn't have a super good time on this tour but that was mostly my fault. He told our group all sorts of interesting facts about the town, lighthouse and lake.did you know an airplane went missing after reporting a UFO-me either before I took the tour. The volunteers who led the tour was personable, knowledge & accommodating. If you're looking to learn some interesting local history this is a good tour to take. This Tour was a very interesting way to spend a couple of hours. The Ontonagon Lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 1975. Johanson is extremely well-versed in local history making his presentation very engaging. Many antiques of the era that would have been part of day-to-day life are on display there. This lighthouse, built in 1866, includes the lightkeepers’ living quarters.
